You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy plants and that’s pretty much the same thing.
What was your hobby/obsession during the lockdown? For me, houseplants became an obsession. I went from having no indoor plants at all to a large and beautiful plant family. As a recent empty nester, I now spend my quiet early mornings lovingly watering my houseplants, even having early morning chats with them over Earl Grey tea. (Plants are great listeners.)
I was drawn to plants for their aesthetics and their ability to promote health and wellness, but I think the simple act of growing something and tending to it is relaxing. Plants have been shown to purify the air, boost our mood, and lower stress levels. They also provide a connection to nature that can be especially important when we’re spending more time indoors. Of course, caring for plants requires some effort and attention, but it’s a small price to pay for the benefits they provide. As someone who was once known for my unparalleled ability to kill even the hardiest of plants, I promise you it’s never too late to develop a green thumb.
Check out one of my new favorite Boulder stores, Terracotta, at 2005 Pearl St. They obviously have plants and accessories for sale, but I am a repeat customer because of the full service and advice about anything plants. I have been treating myself to a visit at least once a month, and while it is a bit expensive, it’s SO worth it. On my most recent visit, I learned how to drill holes in the bottom of planters (hint: ceramic drill bit) and I rescued a dying plant that they were looking to find a home for – and now I feel like a boss when I notice how great that little plant is doing in my kitchen.
With a little research, patience, and love, anyone can learn to appreciate the beauty and benefits of plants. So go ahead and add a little green to your life – your plants (and your well-being) will thank you for it!
